The Best Places to Retire in the US and Abroad

When retiring, it’s important to weigh out all the options -- including retiring abroad! But wherever you decide to spend your non-working years, it’s best to do some research first. That's why we’ve put together a list of some of the best places to retire, and highlighted a few of each location's unique benefits:

NoHo Senior Artists Colony, California, US: This is a more recently developed retirement community located in North Hollywood, California, that is specifically for those with a love for the arts. While it is a rather posh community -- some of its residents even being Hollywood people -- it offers a lot for those looking to connect with artists and art lovers. Within the community, educational opportunities are also offered, which makes this a wonderful place for you or a loved one to continue your passion for creativity!

Kent, England: Here, the second “dementia village” is being built. While this is not the cheapest option on this list, it a wonderful opportunity for those looking to get away from the typical dementia care settings. Its founders are focused on deinstitutionalizing the usual medical model type of facility, and instead creating a space that is about community -- while providing the care support and safe environment necessary.

Chiang Mai, Thailand: Besides the gorgeous temples, the warm weather, and the already established communities of retirees, Thailand offers a unique mix of old and new for those looking to retire abroad. The country’s living costs are surprisingly affordable, and with so many sights to see, you or your loved one would never be bored! There’s a little bit of home in Chiang Mai, but so many new and unique experiences too that everyday will feel like a new one.

Malaysia: Here, English is a common language spoken. There is already a large collection of retirees and expats living there, setting up clubs that have been around since the 1700s. Malaysia has a long history of welcoming retirees, and they never disappoint. Here, the cost of living is affordable and tantalizing, and the sights to see and live by are just as well. With beaches and cities, plus street stalls that sell food from all over the world, Malaysia has created a comfortable step outside your comfort zone without feeling out of your depth.

Costa Rica: Costa Rica continues to make most all of the best places to retire lists, and we can see why (it’s why the country made it onto our list!). With its beautiful landscapes -- from waterfalls to beaches to active volcanoes -- and its national park system. These past few years, Costa Rica has topped the Happy Planet Index, and its people can attest to that. The cost of living is affordable, the sights are amazing, and the platform to learn more about another culture and people without going too far away is very appealing.

Lake Weir Living, Florida, US: At Lake Weir, residents are highly encouraged to bring their motorcycles, classic cars, campers, and boats -- and they will customize your home there with a garage big enough to fit everything!

Italy: There are a lot of reasons to retire in Italy. Its beautiful landscape and picturesque towns are only a small part of the benefits. Healthcare in general is much cheaper in Italy because public healthcare is provided to all legal residents. Italy offers a rich history for you or a loved one to explore, whether that’s in Naples or Abruzzo or any other number of its beautiful cities, villages, and towns.

Things to Consider Before Retiring Abroad

When considering these and any other dream locations, know that committing to the lifestyle abroad is a big jump. If you, your loved one, or your partner are not 100% committed, have a conversation about concerns -- because life is so much different in other countries than in the United States.

A re-entry plan is also in order. Even though retiring abroad may be your dream, people often want to come back eventually -- even if this means renting the home you own while you are living abroad, or being prepared to rent when you return.
